Personal Statement
My goals have always been in challenging myself with new ways of thinking, and creating a new level of understanding of those who share the same goals. I maintain a belief that there is always a way to make complex problems easier and anyone can get the self-satisfaction of conquering these obstacles with the right help. Providing this assistance can be fulfilling in itself and can motivate me to learn and expand my own horizons. In 1989 I began working in a broadcast mentorship program that trained people to work in radio broadcasting. I found that I was not cut out for on-air work, but I gravitated toward more technical parts of the business like audio engineering. This was not the most interesting part of the process for some, and challenging for others, and it gave me the chance to share my newfound passion where technology met music, and I got my first taste of teaching. I continued to assist in teaching audio technology through my time working at San Francisco State’s Cinema Department. There I was able to effectively portray the concept to visual artists that the soul of their work lay beyond the eye alone, but in the combination of aural and visual perception to push their art to the next level. My own realization of the connection between art and technology was a major awakening, which arose from the two-way information exchange that teaching is. At this point I decided I wanted to teach at a college level. After working in tech, broadcasting and sound engineering I developed a deeper understanding of the connection between art and technology and I got the chance to share my passion in a teaching capacity at Expression College in Emeryville, the largest sound engineering school on the West Coast. I got to help build the program, and shape the next generation of creative and technical minds, which now populate the gaming, television production and music studios, as well as the largest Silicon Valley tech companies. Seeing the success of my students has always been my favorite part of teaching. I have always been excited by the newest technology and expanding my knowledge to include new methods of doing things. Encouraged by my employer to get a higher degree, I chose business because I wanted to expand my love of audio and video broadcast technology to product design, and to be a part of the teams creating the new technology myself. I have developed leadership and presentation skills from years in the classroom and working across departments in corporate environments, and my time at West Texas A&M’s MBA program has given me the business acumen to support my experience with data-driven decision making and go-to-market strategy to make a new product happen.
